Regular homework is set and posted on line through the parent portal program, and feedback provided to pupils and parents. Curriculum and Timetable

On entering Year 7, pupils will be placed by prior attainment as measured by results in the Key Stage 2 SATs into one of two bands. The bands are divided into two teaching classes, creating four groups which we call 7P, 7Q, 7R & 7S. Within the bands pupils are set for Mathematics and Spanish. In Years 8 and 9 most lessons taught in classes, although there is setting in Mathematics and languages when pupils are allocated to classes according to ability in the subject. The curriculum in the Middle School years is broad and balanced as can be seen in the curriculum overview above and made up of 19 different components, 14 of which are traditional academic subjects. and balanced so that pupils can explore many different areas of knowledge and develop their skills, abilities and interests.

A unique feature of the Middle School is that every pupil is involved in the Spanish Immersion programme and begins the study of Latin.

The timetable is set on a two week cycle of 50 65 minute lessons: prosaically titled Week A and Week B. The two-week cycle includes 2 periods of games and 4 periods of activities.

Houses and Form Time

Every pupil is assigned to both a House and a form group. Each House has a pastoral area with lockers near a House leader in the Middle School  The houses attend chapel together and there is a weekly House assembly. In addition, the houses compete in various intramural sporting events and activities.

NSI

NSI (Non Solum Ingenii – Not Only Intellect) is the name given to the Middle School, Upper School and Sixth Form section of the PSHCE programme of study. This is a new programme, having been introduced in September 2014. It has been developed in light of parental and pupil feedback and our prime intention is to respond to pupils’ needs. We welcome pupil, parent and colleagues’ feedback in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and continually improve it. Three NSI Leads, one in each school, are responsible for the development, evaluation and co-ordination of the delivery of the programme. The NSI Lead for Middle School is Ms L Hamilton.

The content in Middle School (Key Stage 3) and Upper School (Key Stage 4) 4 is based on the framework provided by the PSHE Association and is based on three core themes:

1. Health and Wellbeing
2. Relationships
3. Living in the Wider World

How is NSI Delivered?

NSI is delivered during one or both of the registration slots, with House Form groups having specific allocated days for this purpose. House Tutors deliver the programme and NSI Leads assist Heads of House in evaluating the quality of the teaching of NSI.

Sport and Activities

Pupils compete in numerous competitive sports fixtures. In addition there is a broad programme of activities. These include: Art - Cre8 group, Boys rugby, Chess, DT - 'Design and Make It' group, Girls hockey, Knitting and crafts club, Debating group, Girls netball, ICT – Coding, School play rehearsals, Science STEM CLUB.

In Form time Middle Schoolers engage with the Great Books programme, an opportunity for pupils to read well known and challenging books they select themselves from a list created by the English Faculty. It is also the time when NSI (an abbreviation of NON SOLUM INGENII, Not only the intellect from the College motto), our program of Personal Health Social Citizenship and Character education, is delivered.

Careers

In Year 8, Middle Schoolers begin to receive independent Careers education. We  use the Inspire Program, a partnership between CASCAID and Futurewise. This programme begins in Middle School but is continued in the Upper School. It seeks to raise the aspiration of our pupils and assist them in selecting appropriate GCSE courses and post-16 courses.

The School Day and Routines

The timetable is divided into 50 65 minute periods over two weeks. Every year group has a Games session. A key feature of the timetable is the extensive activities programme. Two periods per week are set aside for activities and pupils can select from a wide variety of options including sports, the arts, adventurous activities, community service and academic enrichment.

Middle Schoolers may choose to take their lunch in the Middle School Hall, or may choose to eat in the main College dining room.

The SENCO and the SEN staff provide support and guidance to pupils, parents and staff, and works closely with Heads of School and Heads of Year to ensure individual needs are met.

Pupils with English as an Additional Language take extra lessons to develop their English skills, replacing some timetabled lessons.
