Silver DofE Training

On Saturday 25th April, 42 Year 10 cadets and 8 leaders set off in four minibuses to the Peak District to complete their training for the Duke of Edinburgh Silver award. This camp was a one night training expedition with 6 miles of walking each day to prepare the students for their full expedition in June.

The expedition allowed the cadets returning to the Peak District after their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition to renew their skills and confidence. For the number of students that are new to Liverpool College and the CCF it was a chance to apply, for the first time, skills they have been learning in class. The pupils had the opportunity to use their hiking adroitness with skills including orienteering, radio and communication, outdoor cooking and importantly teamwork. Fortunately the weather held up, excluding a few rain-drenched hours on Saturday night. However it seemed to clear the sky because on Sunday morning the cadets woke to a blue sky without a cloud in sight.

For some, this experience was a literal walk in the National Park but for others this was a more gruelling experience that gave a more realistic view on the Silver award and preparing for it. Hopefully all cadets and leaders will recuperate quickly from the expedition and be ready for the practice expedition 16-18th May.  S. Denno

Sixth Form Taster Lessons

We invite anyone considering Liverpool College for Sixth Form to come to some taster lessons which we will be holding in February.  This is so that you can experience A Level teaching in your chosen subjects and meet staff and students.  You will also be able to learn more about the Extended Project Qualification which extends your abilities and interests beyond the A Level syllabus.  For details please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Spanish Exhange

Our Year 8 & 9 students visiting Spain this week have enjoyed a day trip to Segovia today with their exchange partners. They have  had a fantastic day visiting the fortress( Alcázar de Segovia) and aqueduct.

Speech Night

On Tuesday 31^stMarch, the Senior School travelled to the Philharmonic Hall to celebrate the achievements of our pupils and of our staff at the annual Speech Night and Prize Giving. Staff and pupils were joined by the High Sheriff of Merseyside, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, parents, governors, foundation members, former pupils and other guests.

The evening  was a great success particularly because of the excellent music, with Amy Murphy, Fiona Sinclair Ford and Ted Burnham starring as soloists, and our guest speaker Professor Hemingway from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Her talk was appreciated, particularly by our Sixth Formers for its straightforward advice about finding and pursuing a career.

It was a special honour that the parents and husband of Louise Reeves were able to join us, as the evening marked the first occasion when the Louise Reeves Award for Learning with Character was presented. This award, presented in memory of Mrs Reeves, recognises a pupil who has given their best, no matter the circumstance and continues to do so. The idea for the creation of this award came from the fact that Mrs Reeves herself was presented with a similar award when she was at school.

STEM Challenge Day

The STEM challenge day was hosted by Liverpool University and involved fifteen More Able students from Year 9. The day comprised of three separate workshops, each designed to challenge pupils in the areas of Science, Technology and Mathematics. Details of each workshop are listed below.

Cleaning up with robots

The robotics session involved using a computer to program a robot equipped with sensors and motors to navigate around and in some cases avoid obstacles. The pupils' experiences using Scratch and Visual Basic helped them achieve some quite exciting results!

Disaster in Mathemagicland

This was a scenario-based activity where students used various different clues to solve problems. This resulted in them building a variety of 2D and 3D geometric objects.

Turtle Island

After a lecture about volcanology and geology, students were given the challenge of applying their knowledge to plan a way in which an island can have its precious minerals mined following an eruption. This also involved finding a safe location for a town and a port which would be safe in the case of a future eruption.
